vitamin B6

this little beauty is good for all sorts of things. here is the long list of ailments vit. b6(pyridoxine) helps control or heal. hypertension, nervousness, cancer immunity, allergies, arthritis, asthma, acne, eczema, kidney stones, and pms (can i get an amen on this one). vitamin b6 is involved in more body functions that almost any other single nutrient. the foods that have the highest amounts of vitamin b6 are brewers yeast, carrots, chicken, eggs, fish, meat, peas, spinach, sunflower seeds, walnuts, and wheat germ. if these foods in large quantities are not your bag of than a supplement is the way to go.

on another note...vitamin d that i shared with you last week should not be taken at the same time as a magnesium supplement. it does not hurt you, just decreases the effectiveness of a magnesium supplement if taken at the same time. in combination with vitamin b6 it works to reduce and disolve calcium phosphate kidney stones. please also note that you should always follow the dosage that is given on the supplement that you choose to take and make sure that the daily value is somewhere around 100%. some supplements have a very large daily value and are made for temporary use in battling certain diseases. you do not want to take those for everyday use.

can anyone relate?

i do not know what is more disturbing.
  • this is four days of laundry at my house. yes it only took four days to dirty this much laundry.
  • i have spent the last two days chained to the laundry room washing it all (those piles you see, some of them are over 5 feet tall).
  • and yes there is still more to do. is there ever a time when there is not laundry to do?

garlic really?

so about three weeks ago this common wart (that is such a gross word) appeared on my right ring finger knuckle. so i let it go for a couple of weeks really wondering if it was a wart or if it was just a cut that had gotten infected. to make a long story short, i bought a book last week that i have been glued too since in came in the mail. is is called prescription for nutritional healing. the book it gives all kinds of advice on how to heal naturally. so i looked up that common wart and guess what it said...garlic. fresh garlic crushed and only on with wart. cover it with a band aid for 24 hours and the wart will blister and peal off. i will tell you that when i took off my bandage the wart was already significantly smaller. i will let you know what happens with the blister. i just think that it is so cool that God has given us so many things to heal simple common aliments. i love doctors, have many of them as personal friends, and they are truly amazing, but isn't it nice for the simple things to take care of them at home. who has some natural healing tips they want to share?

Vitamin D

( the above picture is the kids supplement that we use)

i am a vitamin and herb kind of girl. we take them at our house on a daily basis. i really try to encourage as much natural healing with our family as possible. we regularly see our chiropractor and we take vitamins. in general i would consider our family very healthy. praise the Lord, we have never had any major illness to deal with and i take absolutely no credit for that blessing. i do know that taking vitamins and herbs aids in the health of families but God is the ultimate physician and controls all things.

i have talked about my husbands great aunt and uncle before. aunt martha was a huge advocate for vitamins and herbs (she lived to be 90). there are many other stories like hers that indicate a healthy life involved healthy eating and taking care of your body by not over using conventional medicine.

do not get me wrong. if anyone in our family requires an antibiotic to heal correctly, we take it, and are thankful that the medicine is available to us.

in an effort to keep myself and you informed of the vitamins that seem to be most beneficial i am going to post about one supplement a week. i am not an expert, only a girl that does alot of research.

vitamin d is a great supplement to take in the fall and winter months when it is cloudier and colder outside. in the spring and summer the sun provides us with larger quantities of vitamin d. it is called the sunshine vitamin and aids in cardiovascular support, immune support, healthy brain function, muscle and bone health, and energy and vitality. i do not take vitamin d in the summer and spring when i am outdoors and getting plenty of natural vitamin d. in the winter i think it keeps us healthier and up and running at a more efficient pace. if you are taking a multivitamin check to see the amount of vitamin d in it. surprisingly some multivitamins do not contain vitamin d. if it has it look at the percentage. you may need to just get a booster that gives you the amount that you need to reach 100% in a day. or eat more yogurt. it has vitamin d, or drink vitamin d milk (just limit your fat content elsewhere).

ps...i give the children a vitamin d supplement too. they make a kids dosage that can be purchased at your healthfood store or on vitamins.com called vitamin d rex.
on another note...vitamin d should not be taken at the same time as a magnesium supplement. it does not hurt you, just decreases the effectiveness of a magnesium supplement if taken at the same time. please also note that you should always follow the dosage that is given on the supplement that you choose to take and make sure that the daily value is somewhere around 100%. some supplements have a very large daily value and are made for temporary use in battling certain diseases. you do not want to take those for everyday use.

let me know if this is helpful information.

more to come on supplements next week.

samples and freebies

a couple of weeks ago i saw a post on one of the blogs i follow for moms that have a blog to try some homeopathic supplements and medicine for cold and flu symptoms. i was a little skeptical on the quantity that i would receive so it made me wonder if it was worth my time to fill out the form. i did fill it out and in the mail yesterday was the goods, and oh my goodness, they are full size bottles like i would go to the health food store and purchase. i did not realize that when you sign up for samples they are full sized. maybe this is not normal, but i will definitely make the effort to continue to sign up for samples when i know it is a product that my family will use. there are a lot of freebies and giveaways out there so don't waste your time on things that are not beneficial to you and your family. if there is something you will use, make the effort. i am sure it will help out your budget and it is always fun to get a package in the mail, freebie or not.

btw...the products that i received are from boiron and are for children's cold and flu symptoms. if we have to use them this season i will let you know how we like them. i am sure praying that we do not need them. the nice thing about these products is there is one just for the common cold to help relieve sniffles and such. that is always handy to have around.
what is your experience with samples and freebies?

paper products

my stockpile on paper products is dwindling so i have been on the lookout the past couple of weeks for toilet paper and paper towels. i am going to buy this week because there are a few deals that are pretty good. at kroger HERE are the deals(bounty and charmin) that i am going to purchase. at walgreens HERE is the deal(quilted northern) that i am going to do.

on a side note...i will tell you that we have adopted using cloth napkins after a friend of mine suggested it and hand towels instead of paper towels as much as possible. because i am such a fanatic about germs i find myself switching out the hand towel in the kitchen about 3 times a day but it really is only one more load of laundry a week with the towels and the cloth napkins. we do use paper towels for cleaning and greasy messes.

what are the paper products that you prioritize?

these are a few of my favorite things

before you think that i have totally fallen of my rocker...laundry is NOT one of my favorite things. however, it is a necessity that is not going away anytime soon. i decided about a year ago when we took on the laundry room project it was going to be filled with favorite things because i spend so much time in there. i want to show you what my precious husband has done for me. i really married up. here is the reveal. we still have to install the faucet at the sink
but that is on back order.
vintage washboard collection, some from his great aunt and uncle's estate
vintage glass door knobs to hold the ironing board and line dry items

cabinets made by hand with "vintage style" latches and hinges
carrara marble tile counter tops
and storage...lots of storage

look at the lines of the molding at the top of the pantry. i love the dimension.

plenty of storage
do you notice a theme with the storage:)

fun window treatment with ribbons

what projects are you working on? i would love to see them! email me pictures.

fresh baked bread

here is a great recipe for fresh baked bread.

Basic White Bread
3/4 cup warm water (100-110°F.)
1 package active dry yeast
1 t. sugar
1 T. vegetable oil or butter
3/4 t. salt
2 C. flour, divided
Combine water, yeast and sugar in a medium mixing bowl and stir until thoroughly dissolved. Let stand for 5 minutes. Stir in oil/butter and salt. Add 1 cup flour and beat until mixture is smooth. Add the remaining cup flour, about 1/4 cup at a time, mixing thoroughly each time. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5 minutes. You may add a small amount of flour (no more than a teaspoon at a time) to keep the dough manageable. Clean and dry mixing bowl. Lightly oil the surface of the dough and place back in bowl. Cover and let rise for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape into a loaf and place in a greased 9" x 5" loaf pan.
Place in oven to bake at 350°F. 35-40 minutes. When bread is baked, if you tap on the top of the loaves it should sound hollow. Remove from pans immediately and cool on racks.Makes 1 loaf.

i always double or triple my batch when i am making bread. the last time i did this i baked two loaves. we ate one right away. and i froze the other baked one.

i also froze 2 loaves of the dough that had risen. then when i wanted to bake it i pulled it out of the freezer in the morning, let it thaw on its own and baked it once it was thawed. it was almost as good as fresh baked. not quite as perfect but definitely good enough to do it again and the convenience was unbeatable.

ps...i always use the yeast that is the quick rise or fast acting yeast. look for it next time you purchase yeast. it makes bread making a much quicker process.

sweet cinnamon biscuits

these are really yummy. they are a simple recipe but delicious! hope you enjoy. total prep time was less than 20 minutes.

Ingredients

2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup buttermilk
8 tablespoons butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup milk (optional)

Directions
1. Combine flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda in a medium bowl and mix well. Stir in vegetable oil. Add buttermilk and stir just until blended.

2. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Roll dough into a 15 by 8 inch rectangle.

3. Preheat te oven to 400°F Grease a 9-inch round baking pan lightly.

4. Spread butter over the dough. Combine granulated sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl and mix well. Sprinkle over butter. Roll up rectangle, jelly roll fashion, starting from one long side. Pinch seam to seal.

5. Cut the roll into 1 1/2-inch slices. Arrange the slices, cut side up, in prepared baking pan. Bake until lightly browned, about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven. Pour milk over the top if desired. Serve hot.

instead of the milk i made a simple frosting that was a thinner frosting with milk and powdered sugar.

baking day

well i have a few friends that have a baking day once a week. i have another friend who has a cooking day once a week, so i decided i should at least try a baking afternoon. today and last monday i have spent the afternoon baking and i have so much to show for it. last week i made 4 loaves of bread and 2 batches of cinnamon rolls. i froze 3 loaves of the bread and one batch of the cinnamon rolls. today i made a triple batch of chocolate chip cookies and froze 3 tubes of dough. on a raining day, or a sunny one, whenever the mood strikes i will pull one of those suckers out, slice it up and wha-la...cookies with no effort, yet homemade.

the beauty of the cooking day is making double and triple batches. it hardly takes any extra effort and the time that it saves in the long run is so helpful. today i pulled out one of the loaves of bread that i froze last week, let is rise and popped it in the oven while i made the cookie dough. perfect for lunches tomorrow. i think i have found a monday tradition.
