eating organic/healthy using coupons

last night i went to kroger with the intention of purchasing mostly food to stock up on some of the items that i we do not have alot of. i also wanted to buy natural or organic food because i have found since i started the whole coupon adventure i have been "settling" for some items that would not be my first choice for my family. in this economy i justified the substitutions to myself but deep down it really bothered me. i can't make myself feel ok about giving my kids high fructose corn syrup when i can choose some natural sweetners.

so anyway i had some great success last night buying organic. i purchased some coupons on ebay for cascadian farm and nature valley a couple of weeks. both sets of coupons were for $1 off any type of item from each brand. i spent $4 to buy 40 coupons that saved me $40. last night my orginal total before coupons was $128.00. after coupons $68.00. i saved close to 50% purchasing fresh food and organic. just thought this was share worthy for those of you that are interested in the whole foods market.

great quote

a dear friend sent this to me earlier. she and i have talked about this before in regard to daddys. this quote really sums it all up.
Father Theodore Hesburgh, longtime president of the University of Notre Dame, said it best: “the most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.”

organizational oasis-color coding closets

no this is not my closet.
if you have this many shirts you need to weed some out.
so here goes...i started color coding my closet about 3 years ago. i grouped all of my shirts and pants by color and it really helps me expedite getting dressed very quickly. it is also a great way to see areas to clean out and areas where a new shirt or slacks might be needed. ex. if you have 12 pink shirts you might need to weed a few out. i also keep winter and summer grouped together in the colors but i put all pink winter shirts together and all pink summer shirts together in one large pink group. i hope that makes sense. another tip is to limit the number if items in one particular color to 2-3 articles of clothing. since i have started this way of organizing i realize that i really have all that i need and if i do purchase something new in a certain color, something of the same color leaves the closet. the only item and color that i have too much of is black pants for obvious reasons:) please comment with any questions and email me before and after pictures.

saturday morning cartoons VII

sorry the morning cartoons are in the evening, but i have always been one to shake things up a little bit to keep it interesting.

free shampoo at walgreens. it retails for 7.99 and has a rebate for up to that amount. the brand it e.sen.cia. it is in a brown bottle with a round ball like lid. it is 95 % organic and smells great. the rebate is found around the neck of the bottle so only buy one with the tag. you will need your receipt. you can also try a styling product for an additional $3.99 rebate. you will have to pay a little out of pocket for the styling product but it might be worth it. especially if you like to use natural products. this rebate is included in the one around the neck of the bottle.

Here is Denise with some wonderful advice. She taught me all about a schedule before we had our little ones and my life is so much simpler because of it.

Last week we talked about job jars and really that applies mostly to children who are old enough to complete a job without your supervision, so we're talking 6 or 7. Today I want to help those out who have toddlers that need A LOT of supervision and really the care of them takes up most of our day. The best piece of advice I have for mothers of preschoolers and 'getting it all done' is a routine. Not only does it help you get things accomplished, it cuts WAY DOWN on your need to discipline. Even those of you who don't like a schedule or routine, you already have one. You have to. There are certain things that need to get done in a day and you do them. You either do them as part of a routine or you do them at the last minute out of necessity. Instead of going on and on about why it helps, how to do it and what to include in your day, I'll give you an example of what I do when my 2 older ones are at school and my 2 younger ones are home. This is just an example. Another day may look different depending on whether or not we have errands to run or something else to do.

These are all 'ish'. I don't follow a strict schedule, just some kind of routine.

6:30-7:30 Get Tyler up and off to school
7:30 Breakfast
8:00 Free play while I get Jackson off to school
8:30 Watch a show while I clean the kitchen and change over the laundry
9:00 Play together in the basement while I clean main floor
9:30 Room time with each of them in their own room while I clean upstairs and do laundry/put clothes away
10:15 or 10:30 Snack
10:45 or 11:00 Go run an errand, go for a walk, go to the park, etc...
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Nap while I clean, do laundry, do my Bible Study and sometimes I nap if someone was up during the night or I went to bed late.
4:00 Everyone is home and needs me all at the same time and I don't know how I survive til bed.

I kid. Sorta. It does get kinda crazy. If one of the little ones wakes up before Tyler gets home(2:45, so it rarely happens), I try to spend time with them coloring or reading books or something they like to do. Once everyone is home, what we HAVE TO DO takes over at that point. Homework, soccer, karate, guitar lessons, church, etc. I try not to do too much so they can play outside after they wake up/finish their homework. Then we have dinner, play a little more outside before it's time for bath and bed.

It's all the same stuff you do, I just like to follow some sort of routine so it gets done. When I follow it, the little ones know what to expect and I don't need to constantly discipline them. They complain and argue less. Try it, you'll like it.

walgreens this week 2

ok, so i can't find my receipt from walgreens and i think that i am loosing my mind because i can't remember everything that i purchased yesterday. i am going to tell you what i do remember.
i bought 2 of these
they are on sale for 8.99. then i used the coupon in the monthly booklet twice so it took $4 of each and then i used 2 of the manufacturers coupons that were in the paper this past weekend that were $4 off each. So i paid $1.98 for something that would have normally cost $17.98. then i purchased 6 bars of yardley soap

that were 79 cents on sale with the weekly coupon and are normally $1.89. i purchased 2 boxes of 36 count playtex tampons
and used the $2 off coupon in the monthly booklet then i used 2 of the $1 off manufacturers coupons from the paper. they totaled $3.99 each box and normally cost $8.99. i know there were a few other things that i am forgetting but again, no brain left ladies. i also used a $10 register reward on my $19 and some change total.
i hope that this helps. i will try to let you know what i buy each week if that would be helpful. let me know if that is something that you want.
a friend also gave me a tip today on energizer batteries. apparently you can buy some for around $5.30 for each pack and there is a monthly rebate for $10 off 2 packs or $15 off 3 packs. That would put you at paying around 60 or 90 cents for 2 or 3 packs. sounds like i might have to go back to get this deal.

Here is a testimonial from a friend that has been using the laundry soap. Just thought you all would want to read this.
Hey L,

I meant to tell you at church a few weeks ago that I also made the laundry soap. I have probably done about 20 loads with it so far and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Also, I've been using the make-it-yourself dishwasher detergent you had in your archives and love it! I think it gets my dishes cleaner than when I was using cascade. I'm using white distilled vinegar in place of Jet Dry and have not had one problem. I'll probably never go back to grocery store brand again.

Walgreens Tips for maximum effectiveness

Go over to Southern Savers, http://www.southernsavers.com/2009/03/walgreens-tips-tricks/, and check out this post on maximizing savings at Walgreens. These are some great tips. I actually just experienced a negative there today. They would only let me use one of my register rewards instead of the two that I was trying to use. I asked if that is a new policy because I have used more than one there before. The manager was not available to answer my question. It was still a great savings day. I got $63.00 in items for $9.36. It would have only been $3.36. What have been your Walgreens experiences?

TT5

Here is Denise with some more great advice...

One of the biggest challenges I have and I think most Moms have is how to get it all done or at least keep up with things....cleaning, laundry, errands, cooking, bills, projects, outside commitments, work, relationships, etc. It can get a bit much to handle and I don't think anyone has the answer, but there are some great ideas to help with the balancing act. Just like anything else you may read or hear about, you use what works for you and leave what doesn't. I found something that helps me and I thought I would pass it along in case it helps some of you.

I first found this on http://www.makeandtakes.com/job-jars, and she found it from someone else. It's pretty obvious, but I have made job jars for each of my boys. Before they can go out and play or watch TV or do something they would like, they have to check their job jar to make sure all the colors are up. If not, they complete their jobs and then they are free to go. The jobs vary according to child, age, specific activities, but I can add a job as I think of it. This is great for me because sometimes I say yes and I forgot that something needs to be cleaned up or they need to practice something or there is a project due in a couple of weeks that they should spend a few minutes on today. Most of the jobs take 5-10 minutes, so it's not really overwhelming for them and it's a great help for me. If I notice the trash needs to be emptied and I can't get to it right now, I just turn over that stick in someone's jar and they get to it when they come home or at some point during the day. If I'm cleaning up at the end of the night and I notice that the main floor needs dusting, I may do it myself or I may give it to someone else. I get to choose. If I'm feeling overwhelmed, I can make a new job and ask someone to help me out. You get the idea.

I planned on doing this last summer, but never got around to it. I'm hoping it will be a big help this summer and help us to have a lot of fun while still getting everything done. There are many more ideas.....small magnetic file folders that hang on the fridge with the jobs on clothespins, pretty clipboards that hang on the wall with checklists, a bowl full of job slips on the table and everyone picks one. Find one that works for you and help your kids help you. Once it becomes routine, you don't have to get after them about doing things. My 8 year old no longer needs a stick to make his bed - he makes it before his feet touch the floor. My 3 and 5 year olds get easier jobs like picking up the blocks in the basement or helping me bring things back to the right rooms. None of them need a stick to pick up their clothes - they all do that already. I'm hoping my 12 year old won't need his jar much longer and show initiative when something needs to be done...he's about 50% on that one!

This works for our family...maybe you'll find some inspiration to do something that helps you get things done while teaching your kids about responsibility. Once things get done, it's easier to say yes to the fun stuff!

growing garden

not yet! but i am sure excited about this new adventure we are taking on this summer. i wanted to let you know a few little tips that i have learned in the past few weeks. coffee grounds are great for the soil. we have been saving ours and i have also been periodically stopping by local coffee shops and asking for their used grounds. if anyone wants to save theirs for me in a ziploc baggie that would be stupendous! another tip is to plant your rows of vegetables running north to south for maximum sunlight and airflow. i would also suggest reading up on the gardening philosophy of companion planting http://thedomesticchick.blogspot.com/2009/02/companion-planting.html. it is very interesting and makes a ton of sense! i will keep you updated on the progress. next week manure (he he) and another till.

i think that using ebay to specifically target certain items that your family uses is a huge money saver. you can normally purchase 10-20 coupons for around $1.50-2.50. what is great is that most of the coupons are for at least $1 saving so you are saving between $10 and $20 depending on the quantity that you buy. this week i checked out the mommy snacks preview for the walgreens http://mommysnacks.blogspot.com/2009/03/walgreens-snack-sale-week-of-march-15.html and cvs http://mommysnacks.blogspot.com/2009/03/cvs-snack-sale-week-of-march-15.html sales for this coming week. after i looked at the sales i went to ebay and purchased coupons for the specific items that i knew i was going to purchase. with an initial investment of $3.25 (including shipping) i will be saving $40 and building a huge stockpile on two specific items that my family uses. if you have any questions about this or have done this for yourselves please comment and share some stories.

TT4 today

It's been a busy day, so this post is up late. But the day made me change what I was going to post tonight. And that is, to say yes as often as you can to your kids because the no's come easy.

I could have easily said no to my 3 year old when he asked me to read him a book (so I could clean the kitchen), but I didn't.
I could have easily said no to my 5 year old when he asked me to color with him (so I could fold the laundry), but I didn't.
I could have easily said no to my 8 year old when he asked me to make brownies with him (because I could do it faster by myself), but I didn't.
I could have easily said no to my 12 year old when he asked me if his friends could come in and play (so the house didn't get messed up), but I didn't.

Do you sometimes say 'not right now' and your kids know that means you won't ever get to it? Can you always say yes? no. I can't always grant their requests, but I try to when I can. I'm trying to teach them to value people more than things (or in a mom's case, 'things to do'). This echoes my post from last week about playing with your kids. Except this time isn't planned. It's the simple requests they have that catch you in the middle of doing something. Say yes when it's not convenient. Say yes when you don't want to do it. Say yes because you can.

Next week we'll talk about how to make the yes easy.

When Le first asked me to do this, 2 things came to mind.
1….Uh, no. Because there are other people WAY more suited to do this and
2….What do I share so I cover the most important things first?

I know everyone wants practical advice and I get that, but I don’t feel like I can just jump right in there without sharing a few foundational things first. That explains the first 2 posts and maybe a few more to follow, but I promise, we’ll get into the more day to day stuff soon.
I think playing with your children ranks right up there with one of the best things you can do for your children. You can teach them skills, teach them how to play, teach them how to be kind and share, but more importantly, you can let them know how much you want to spend time with them and how much you value them. They get that. You can also show them how much you care for them by doing things for them, but let’s face it…that’s not hard to do. We all cook for them, clean for them, do their laundry, take them places and so on. But do you really play with them? You already know what their favorite things are. And it doesn’t take that long…about 10-20 minutes. You might not be able to do it every day, but do it as often as you can. They notice it.

The Invisible Mother

a beautiful mother i know sent this to me. so here it is for you, so many beautiful mothers i know.

THE INVISIBLE MOTHER
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of
response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room
while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store.
Inside I'm thinking, 'Can't you see I'm on
the phone?' Obviously not; no one can see if I'm on
the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even
standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me
at all.
I'm invisible. The invisible Mom. Some days I am only a
pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie
this? Can you open this? Some days I'm not a pair of
hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to
ask, 'What time is it?' I'm a satellite guide to
answer, 'What number is the Disney Channel?' I'm
a car to order, 'Right around 5:30, please.'
I was certain that these were the hands that once held
books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that
graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared
into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She's
going, she's going, she's gone!
One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating
the return of a friend from England .. Janice had just
gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and
on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there,
looking around at the others all put together so well. It
was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself. I was
feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a
beautifully wrapped package, and said, 'I brought you
this.' It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe .
I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me
until I read her inscription: 'To Charlotte , with
admiration for the greatness of what you are building when
no one sees.'
In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And
I would discover what would become for me, four
life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:
No one can say who built the great cathedrals
we have no record of their names.
These builders gave their whole lives
for a work they would never see finished. They made great
sacrifices and expected no credit. The passion of their
building was fuelled by their faith that the
eyes of God saw everything.
A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came
to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw
a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He
was puzzled and asked the man, 'Why are you spending so
much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered
by the roof? No one will ever see it.' And the workman
replied, 'Because God sees.'
I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into
place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me,
'I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make
every day, even when no one around you does. No act of
kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no
cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and
smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you
can't see right now what it will become.'
At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction But it
is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for
the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote
to my strong, stubborn pride. I keep the right perspective
when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people
who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to
work on something that their name will never be on.
The writer of the book went so far as to say that no
cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there
are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.
When I really think about it, I don't want my child to
tell the friend he's bringing home from college for
Thanksgiving, 'My Mom gets up at 4 in the morning and
bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for
three hours and presses all the linens for the table.'
That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to
myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if
there is anything more to say to his friend, to add,
'You're gonna love it there.'
As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be
seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very
possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we
have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the
world by the sacrifices of invisible women.
Great Job, MOM!
